Testing tomorrow’s offshore wind technology

The industry is predicting a bright future for floating offshore wind farms. An entirely new concept has recently been tested in Trondheim.



Phase One – Evaluation of the concepts

A key objective of the LIFES50+ project is to optimize and qualify to a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 5, two innovative floating substructure designs for 10MW turbines.

First technical milestone: The Design Basis in LIFES50+

These reports provide concept developers with the information required to upscale floating platform concepts to support a 10MW wind turbine in three reference locations, taking also into consideration the requirements for the concepts evaluation.



New and more effective model test

A series of model tests of a floating wind-turbine using a completely new method has recently been carried out in MARINTEK’s ocean laboratory.



Phase one qualification performed

Phase 1 of the Lifes50+ project was completed during the evaluation workshop in Barcelona from 8-10 March 2017. The Phase 1 qualification (MS#4) presented the outcomes from the evaluation of the four innovative floating substructure concept designs.



The third technical milestone: The Evaluation methodology ready in LIFES50+

Politecnico di Milano: Wind tunnel tests

LIFES50+ are going to qualify four substructures for floating offshore wind turbines. In Milano researchers are now testing the turbines in a wind tunnel with a goal of increasing their technological readiness level (TRL). Learn more about the test in this video



LIFES50+ flyer

There is a need for new innovative substructure concepts, including floating platforms, to reduce production, installation and O&M costs for water depths of more than 50m.



Next generation floating wind technologies

A major international collaborative project involving 12 partners from eight countries and worth €7.3million is set to drive forward development of the next generation of floating wind substructures.
